Makeup Lowdown: LiLash Eyelash Serum

I have to admit, I was a huge skeptic of the eyelash serum craze. A hefty price tag for something that may or may not have some side effects to one of my most important senses? Just didn't sound like my cup of tea. Long after my favorite waterproof mascara had been discontinued, I had given up any efforts to my emphasize my lashes because A. Other mascaras were not cutting it and B. It was taking up too much time out of my a.m./p.m. regime! So alas, every time I applied mascara on my eyelash-gifted clients, I had come to accept that lifeless lashes were with me for the long haul.

After envying the lashes of a few female companions of similar ethnic background, they told me their secret was none other than the eyelash stimulator LiLash* (retails $140). I had heard very little of the product and was more aware of their leading competitor's ads that run on the TV with the lady from the "Blue Lagoon". You can find a list of the ingredients under the FAQ on their website here. As I finally knew people in real life that used the product with much success, I decided to give it a go beginning February 1st of this year. This is my account of the first 4 months using LiLash including a few time lapse photos below. A description of my lashes before I started the serum: black, definitely short in length, very thin in width, and straighter than a ruler. Basically blah.

My first two months I was a diligent little bee, applying the serum at least once nightly and sometimes both morning and night to the top lash line only as instructed. The brush is similar to a liquid liner brush and the serum itself is clear. It was recommended to me that only a tiny amount for each application is really needed, thus, a tube may last you longer than the six months the company suggests. I first noticed a tiny bit of growth just after three or four weeks. I wouldn't say I was amazed at this point, to be honest, I was a bit disappointed at how wispy thin they were growing just at the tips. Then I started lagging on my application, I would go out of town and forget it or I was just too sleepy to apply that extra step at night. But that didn't seem to stop the growing process!

Now after a little over four months of using LiLash semi-consistently, I can confidently say I am pretty pleased with the results. The top and bottom lashes have definitely grown in length which is most noticeable when I curl them although I am still waiting for some va-va-voom in the volume department. They haven't begun to naturally curl like some others have experienced but will hold a curl well when using a quality eyelash curler. I should also note, I have luckily not noticed any side effects that I had read about on other blogs before trying the product- which to name a few are skin discoloration around the eyes or minor eye irritation. It is important to use the product correctly as indicated on their website- if it bothers you, than stop immediately! If the product works for you, it is also stated that you must continue regular use of the product to keep up the results. So now I am basically hooked plus there is also an eyebrow stimulator called LiBrow that I would consider using.

Never before have other people complimented or envied my own lashes so frequently! To be fair, it is a combination effort of my new runner up mascara, the obsessive curling with my Shiseido eyelash curler, and the prolonged use of the Lilash serum. But hey, a girl can dream right? If you have used this product or something similar, let me know how long you have been using it and what you think of your results.

A new segment where I ask just five quirky questions to the wonderful people I have had the pleasure to work with- and hopefully this is a fun way for you to get to know them better! To see a previous post of a shoot we did together, check it out here.

One... Please share with us one of your favorite kooky or unexpected tales from one of your shooting experiences: One of my first weddings I shot I had a fairly awkward moment with the groom's family. As we got started on the family formals, which by the way I was never really introduced to any of the family on the groom's side, I asked for the immediate family to step in with the couple. The grandparents stood up and started taking pictures with them. When I asked the grandfather to stand on the other side of the groom the groom politely said, "That’s my dad." As you can imagine, I felt pretty embarrassed but kept going and apologized quickly without hesitation. =)

Two... What are your favorite tunes to listen to while editing after a shoot?

I knew at some point this was going to be asked. I typically listen to rock, jazz, some R&B. I love listening to Flogging Molly or some sort of easy listening, specifically Ray LaMontagne. However, somehow dance music has made its way into my repertoire of songs to keep me going as I sit for hours editing away. Crazy, I know but it is what it is. The straight forward rhythm allows me to forget about everything else and move quickly. Also, some of it is fun (Yes, I said it, some of it is fun). =)

Three... If you were not behind the lens, what other career path(s) spark your interest?

As some do know, I have been a drummer at heart for years. I started studying with a drum instructor and playing in bands when I was fifteen. once I moved away to college I realized that I would have to put the dream aside for some time and get school done and over with. So if I weren't behind the camera I would be up on stage spinning my sticks and rocking out.

Four... Using these perimeters, what would be your ultimate shoot? Person (past or present), place (on the map or a figment of your imagination), and theme:

My ultimate shoot would be comprised of a couple different things. First off, any couple and every couple is beautiful. My goal as a photographer is to not make someone feel special because t hey are pretty it is to make them feel special because they just are. So ultimately whoever hires me and has an awesome heart for their relationship and my photography. Second, I would love to shoot in Italy. A wedding in Italy would top the charts in my mind. Its beautiful landscapes and endless inspirational history would be so epic. In terms of style I would love it to be in some form or another "Anthropology-ish". I think that earthy quality would fit my vision and location perfectly.

Five... People may not know I can:

I can drive with my knees and play air drums while driving!!! Dangerous I know but I would have to say it is another talent of mine. =)

Makeup Lowdown: "Ghost Monk Girl"

My final behind-the-scenes look at "making up" the characters from the "SlipPage" film set...

Props to Brittany for her incredible ability to play the "Ghost Monk" character, (her first film debut btw), while wearing the specially ordered "Blind" contacts that literally, made her unable to see anything but pitch-black. How she was so on-point with her cues with those uncomfortable eye fixtures, really made the crew wonder if she had a secret talent for navigating in the dark.

Brittany also has a knack for creating her own wicked hair dye job- reminds anyone of the X-Men character, Storm?

Makeup Lowdown: "Ghost Monk Girl"

SKIN:

Make sure the skin is toned and well-moisturized. This will help the Ben Nye cream and powder foundation have a smoother platform to glide on.
Using a clean sponge, apply Ben Nye Cream Color in "White" all over the skin, including any exposed areas like the neck or hands. Now blend, blend, blend!
Now take another clean sponge and with a stippling action, apply Ben Nye's Powder Foundation in "Coolover Grey" all over the same skin areas that the white makeup has been applied. Don't forget to blend so the grey appears smooth.

EYES:

Prep lids with eyeshadow primer, I used Too Faced Eyeshadow Insurance.
I took the black cream shadow from Sephora with my fingertips and layed it all around the ball of her eye for a base. Try also Makeup Forever's Aqua Black Waterproof Cream version.
With a damp eyeshadow brush, apply a matte black shadow ( I used Yaby's Abyss) and follow the shape of the eye above the crease and create a strong, half-moon with a wide cat eye tip at the outer edge. You may need to do several layers of this for a very deep black. Create a thick line right under the eye with the same damp brush and eyeshadow and into the inner corner of the eyes.
Line the upper lashline with Bobbi Brown's Waterproof Gel Liner in "Black Ink"; line the inner bottom lashline rim as well.
Curl lashes and coat with waterproof mascara. Remove any clumps with a good lash comb, I like Sephora's metal comb.
Use Q-tips to correct any eye design shapes and clean up access underneath. It is okay to blend the fallen black shadow into the skin tone because thankfully, the skin color desired is grey!
Deepen the brow shape with a dark brow powder and a eyebrow makeup brush- or mix black and dark brown shadows like I did for the same effect.
Set the entire look with Makeup Forever's Mircofinish HD Powder with a big powder brush (make sure to get the area around the eyes as well) and spritz Ben Nye's Final Seal Spray. 3-4 times at a distance with the makeup model's eyes closed.

LIPS:

Mix Vaseline and the Ben Nye grey foundation powder (I use a spatula to dust off the powder onto the back of my hand) to create a creamy grey lip color. Apply to the lips with a lip brush starting from the outer lip perimeters and work your way towards the center.

Movie Magic: Death Becomes Her

Let's face it...makeup isn't always "pretty".

For one, the cosmetic concepts for independent sci-fi thriller "SlipPage" is far from glam; from its weary-ridden characters to the very paranormal beings, the film's focus is on its intriguing characters. As one of the picture's makeup artists, I am having fun with every new curveball thrown! You may also recall my previous post on the film's tattoo concealment process seen here.

The vivacious-in-real-life actress featured in these photos plays lead character "Sanders'" deathly ill mother, (whom we will ironically refer to as M.A. for bloggin' purposes). Nonetheless, M.A.'s character lies mostly on her death bed and required a look less than appealing. The step-by-step process follows how I achieved this effect.

BEFORE + AFTER

"Deathly Ill" Makeup Process:

I prepped the skin with an exfoliating toner but left out the essential moisturizers so the actress' complexion will appear more dehydrated and lifeless as the makeup builds on this dry texture.
I used one of the lightest shades in my RCMA "Shinto" Foundation Palette, (about two shades lighter than her natural skin tone), and applied it all over the face and decolotte with a foundation brush and blended it evenly with a sponge. M.A.'s hand was also to be shown in the scene so her hand and wrist also received the same lighter foundation treatment.
Jane Iredale's Mineral Powder Foundation in "Bisque" was applied next for fuller coverage. To achieve the sickly, aging skin tone, I contoured with Ben Nye's Color Cake Foundation in both "Sollow Green" and "Coolover Grey" with my favorite double-ended Sti la #24 Illumuniating Blush Brush. I also contoured the cheekbones and hairline with Clinique's Colour Surge Eyeshadow Quad in "Teddy Bear" for added depth.
To create the eye's deep and sunken-in effect, I mixed Yaby Eye Shadows in shades of dark taupe and purple-grey hues that were blended all around the eye socket (the photos here unfortunately do not reflect the intensity shown in real life!). Reddish eyeshadow tones were applied very close to the upper and lower lash line with a fine eyeliner brush.
No lip conditioner used here, the more cracked, the better. The same light RCMA foundation shade was also applied to the mouth for an ultimate lack of color.
Set the entire face and neck with Ben Nye's Translucent Loose Powder and spray Model in a Bottle for a long-lasting finish.

Secret Sessions

Here is to another boudoir shoot with Missy Bachmeier of Portland+Vancouver's Take 5 Photography. Several times a year, Missy schedules marathon boudoir days or private sessions for women who are either wanting to surprise their other halves with something special or just as a treat for themselves. Here is the shoot I did with the very fun-spirited Emmy; those captivating eyes, oh my!

I always get a kick out of asking the ladies of boudoir sessions, how they slyly get away from their significant others for a few hours to do the shoot. Sometimes it seems as though your partner doesn't take notice that you have gone from brunette hair one day to auburn the next but they can instinctively tell you have something up your sleeve- and start instigating into your master plan. Reminds me of how much I love surprises.

A Winter Romance

Rain or shine, it's Portland weddin' time.

Santa Barbara-based wedding photographer, Montana Dennis, captured Jaelani's big day up here in the Pacific Northwest, and no amount of raindrops could stop him from taking these beautiful shots of the occasion.

It was a joy to get to know the stunning bride, Jaelani, and her loving family. She requested a natural look as she normally does not wear too much color, so we opted for tones that would bring out her eyes (and complement the burgandy-colored elements in her wedding) and a natural toned lip. After all the makeup and beauty tools were stashed away, her family graciously shared some steaming hot ramen with me in their hotel room, as we enjoyed the last few quiet moments before the ceremony.

Check out their engagement photo session posted on Montana's blog taken just the day before- a downtown parking garage never looked sweeter! The delicious bouquets and flower arrangements seen here were provided by my favorite local floral designer, Rosemary Stafford. Cheers to Sam and Jaelani!

Local women's wear designer, Emily Riordan-Roache, approached me to paint the face of model Lauren Luiz for her upcoming Fall/Winter 2011 Lookbook shot by photographer, Allegra Villella, and who wouldn't oblige after seeing her meticulously hand-crafted designs below? There is nothing like a great structured coat, or what I like to refer to as the "cloak of confidence", to make you feel perfectly dressed for any occasion.

We decided to keep the makeup look light and feminine for this shoot; I chose a color palette that would complement the collection's fall/winter season as well as Lauren's beautiful auburn mane.

It would be difficult for a makeup artist, let alone any artist for that matter, to share just a few of their must-have items. Here's a peek into the favorites found in my personal makeup bag as well as my makeup kit used on-set...(in no particular order, as narrowing this down to just six products each was quite a feat in itself!)

EVERYDAY:
1. Lancome Effacernes Waterproof Protective Undereye Concealer- $29.50. I didn't know that leaving my acne-prone teenage years meant in return, I would have to welcome the dark circles that began to form under my eyes. After many trial-and-error concealers that would never stay put throughout the day, a pal suggested this very concealer that is WATERPROOF. And I haven't looked back since. (Don't skimp on the eye cream or moisturizer before applying this concealer for the best application.)

2. Anastasia Brow Duo- $22. Besides wearing sunscreen 365 days a year, wearing an eyebrow filler comes in at a pretty close second. I like having two brow powder shades to choose from to adjust the fullness of my brows and I believe powders look less harsh than brow pencils.

3. Shu Uemera Eyelash Curler- $19. Most beauty publications and makeup bloggers unite in giving this eyelash curler a big "thumbs up" for giving your lashes the most curl without the kink that some less expensive versions leave behind.

4. Tarte 24*7 Natural Lip Sheer with SPF 15- $16. My favorite shade is "Tea Time"- just enough color and the thicker consistency equals longer lasting color.

5. Maybelline Waterproof Lash Stylist Mascara*- *DISCONTINUED! Now why would I mention a product that is long gone but so dear to my beauty junkie heart? I just haven't found another mascara that combines the perfect comb and formula that will amp up my wimpy lashes. This particular Maybelline mascara only needs one coat as the plastic comb laid on the mascara so thick, it made my barely-there lashes appear unreal. Even after trying higher price range waterproof mascaras, this one was the real deal yet still came off easily with my favorite eye makeup remover. Psst..try googling this item for retailers who still have it in stock but are selling it at a higher margin.

6. Stila Eyeshadow Pans- $18. Love at first makeup counter job. The range of shades and formula are fool-proof for just about anyone to use. A great shade eyeliner shade for brown eyes is the deep purple shade "Cassis" as shown- wet your liner brush with a little water before grabbing some color from the pan. Be sure to check out the Nordstrom Rack beauty section to see if you can catch some Stila pans at a steeper discount.

EVERY SHOOT:
1. Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Liner- $21. Stays put! Great shade range! Enough said. Use with a fine tipped liner brush or angled liner brush and pull off the best cat eye, complete a smokey eye look, or for every bride-to-be.

2. Sephora Collection Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover- $9.50 for 4.2 oz. Finally something that replaces my former beloved and discontinued Victoria's Secret Makeup Remover. Shake the bottle up and dispense a small amount onto a Q-tip to clean up any makeup application mistakes. It's like the erase button!

3. Clinique Colour Surge Eye Shadow Quad- $25.50 in "Teddy Bear". A great neutral set that can be used on every person for base shadow colors as well as a face contour palette with a small blush brush or sponge.

4. Stila #20 Eye Enhancer Brush- $32. The price tag might be high for makeup brushes but I can attest Stila brushes are q-u-a-l-i-t-y. One end is slanted to conform to the eye crease for both smaller and larger set eyes and the other end works as a fuller liner brush or lip brush. Two birds in one stone.

5. Model In A Bottle Skin Sensitive Formula- $21. Don't let the silly name fool you, a great setting spray to stretch out any makeup look you created. FYI- although this is the sensitive formula, there is still a light lavender scent.

6. False Lashes- Ardell Individual Lashes shown. False lashes are a must-have for every artists' kit; from subtle individual lashes that are perfect for brides or a set of full luxe lashes to make the eyes really pop for print shoots or down the runway.

Makeup Lowdown: Femme Fatale

After seeing many photos of the fair-haired Emma with her mega-watt smile and captivating eyes flashing the camera, the team knew we had to do a 180 and take her to the dark side- at least for one night. We threw around the idea of seeing Emma as a brunette with plenty of attitude and thankfully, she was more than game. Here is how we transformed the beautiful blonde into her alter-ego "Natalia" for another Choiyee-Kellen-Nadia production. The makeup look consists of an imperfect smokey eye; a little smudged to give her the I-don't-give-a-damn demeanor and a soft lip.

MAKEUP LOWDOWN:

Prep the skin with proper skin care and moisturizers, primers. Curl the top lashes with Shu Uemura's eyelash curler (my favorite by far).
I always like to begin with the eye makeup, this is preferred because I can clean up any debris left behind without having to re-do the face makeup.
Start with sweeping neutral tones across the eye for your base. Next take a black matte shadow (Yaby in Abyss) with a wet shadow brush to the base of the upper eye and undereye. Use the same shadow brush to sweep the color up into an almond shape following the natural crease of the eye. Use a dark brown (Yaby in Coco Powder) at the crease to help transition the dark black and the brow bone for that chromatic effect.
Layer a creamy black eye paint on top of the black almond shape you have created for that messy, sultry look using a concealer brush or your clean fingertips. Try Makeup Forever Aqua Black Waterproof Cream Eyeshadow.
Line the inner waterlines of your eye with a soft, jet black liner (Stila's Kajal Liner in Onyx). Line close to the upper lash line as well.
Deepen the brows to match the darker haircolor with a brown powder or liner- groom the brows with a brush.
Clean up any fallout with a Q-tip dipped in makeup remover and coat your lashes with two layers of black mascara.
Perfect the skin by concealing any blemishes first with a creamy concealer, try Yaby's. Follow with a mineral makeup in the correct foundation shade for your skin tone, try Jane Iredale. Set the base face makeup with a translucent powder.
Contour your cheekbones using matte neutral brown shades (I mix Clinique's "Teddy Bear" Eyeshadow Set) and then top with a peachy pink cheek shade onto the apples.
Give your pout a soft nude lip by lining your entire lip with a neutral lip liner (Rimmel's "Tiramisu" 1000 Kisses Lip Liner) and top with matching lip gloss. Voila!

Movie Magic: Tattoo "Removal"

Sometimes tattoo makeup concealment is necessary when the movie script (as in this particular case) or perhaps your dear grandmother or future employer, are just not feeling the devotion to your favorite jungle animal or your ex-lover's initials that are visible on your body. I admit, I browsed the good ol' Internets for other professional makeup artists' idea of the best technique and products out there to achieve that baby skin once again. There are so many other tattoo cover products out there, especially sold online but I opted for a local store in town I heard sold a professional line. It also allowed me to bring in the person I was doing the process on for color-matching instead of randomly guessing and as an added bonus, I was able to receive some helpful advice from the sales expert.

Tattoo Concealment Process: (All products listed by Ben Nye)

Tattoo Coverage Concealers in two shades mixed, applied with a foundation brush in a stippling motion and an even coat covering the tattoo image and a little beyond into the skin. Use a clean sponge to blend the borders of the tattoo and non-inked skin. You will still visibly see the tattoo as in the photo on the left above but do not worry, as you will need at least another one or two coats of this process.
Let the concealers sit for a moment to dry and then using a powder puff, pat on a generous amount of Neutral Set Translucent Powder to the entire area you applied the concealers and let it sink in.
When the powder has had a moment to settle in, spritz Final Seal Setting Spray on entire concealed area at least 8-10 inches away from the skin.
Repeat step 1-3 until the tattoo is covered. In my case, I did around 2-3 layers of concealment then setting process in between each layer.
If you are still unsatisfied with the color tone of where the tattoo was concealed and it does not match well with the other exposed skin, use Cream Foundations to correct the tone. Repeat powder and spray setting process.

Now this process or perhaps the product itself was not near perfect because the smear factor was still present. You should take note that as you are doing this process, it also is a good idea to have several clean foundation brushes on hand to use while you are doing the layers of concealment because as you stipple on more of the product, you adversely may take away some of the product. Afterwards, clean your foundation brushes with a good brush cleaner as this stuff grabs on to dear life to your bristles and you do not want to further damage them. If you are on set, expect that this whole process will take time, there are not much shortcuts when doing this. Remember to account for the necessary prep time needed before the crew is ready to "go".

Makeup Lowdown: "The Black Swan"

When it comes to Halloween, I don't mess around. Why do I get so excited for this ghoulish holiday even though I cannot sit through five minutes of a horror flick? For one, it allows you to be somebody else for one night (or in my case, three nights in a row this year) and it makes striking up a conversation at a party a bit easier. I normally do not opt for makeup-inspired costume ideas but after being introduced to the yet-to-be-released film by a client, "The Black Swan" character seemed like the perfect choice. (Especially after the idea of making a giant sock monkey costume wasn't appealing anymore!) The movie stars the gorgeous and talented Natalie Portman and is directed by Darren Aronofsk and should be coming to a theater near you this December. Here is how I achieved the look:

The Makeup:

Prep the skin with proper moisturizers and primers.
Using Bobbi Brown's waterproof gel liner in Black Ink (my favorite liners), follow the eye outline shape as seen in the above face charts with a fine liner brush. Create thin "wave" shapes inside the basic outline.
Fill in the empty waves with a bright silver shadow- I used Yaby pearl paint shadow in Platinum with a fine tipped wet brush. If you want a more intense look- I would suggest filling it in with Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner in Glam Rock from Urban Decay.
Repeat the black gel liner over the "wave" lines if necessary. Clean up any errors with a cotton swab dipped in eye makeup remover (I love Victoria's Secret Oil Makeup Remover). Set the entire eye makeup with a translucent loose powder so it does not smudge.
Line the inner rim of your eye with a white eye pencil, try Stila's Kajal Eye Liner in Pearl.
Add some drama by applying thick false lashes to your lashline using a waterproof black adhesive glue from Duo.
Use concealer on any blemishes and visible under eye circles. I opted not to do the pale "swan" skin but if you do, I suggest sponge application of the white cream foundation from Ben Nye and remember to take it down to any visible skin.
Contour your cheekbones with an even mix of brown and black eyeshadows applied with a blush brush.
Fill the entire lips with a dark burgundy lip pencil (Stila's Countour #23), then a similar shade lipstick on top. Finally, dab a black gel cream (Sephora Collection) to deepen the look as far as you want to go.
Take a brush and add vertical stripes of the black waterproof gel liner and white eye liner to your wrists/hands.

The Outfit:

Black tutu and pale pink tights, The Leotard store.
Crown and ring from the toy section, spray painted gunmetal.
Black lace tube top, Express.
Shoes, DKNYC "Teela" (not shown)
Fur shawl from BCBG (not shown)

Modern Day Adam + Eve: The Outcome

Without further ado, here are some of my favorite images by Choi Yee for the "Modern Day Adam + Eve" shoot (honestly, pretty hard to narrow it down to just a few!). We had on board our two lovely models, Kate and Daniel, whom perfectly fit the bill and a fantastic styling team consisting of florist Rosemary, hairstylist Kellen and makeup by yours truly. The concept of the classic Adam + Eve dropped into modern day circumstances had been running through my head for some time and everything turned out exactly as we had envisioned.

We were lucky to have acquired our last minute shooting locations- courtesy of Rosemary's Aunt's backyard (whom may still not know we ever snuck back there) and the Indigo downtown. It was also fun to work with Kate on her first shoot as a new ethereal blonde.

Perhaps this can best be described as a Chinese opera singer meets a Western comic book character- but I will leave it up to your interpretation. Photographer Choiyee, created the striking "fan" pack and Kellen, the hairstylist, pretty much delivered the hair concept based on a sketch she provided. This unique shoot location is no stranger to our model, in fact, it shares the same parking lot as her day job.

Now if only I can get my sideburns to do that...

If you were there to witness the traditional Cambodian ceremony between Sallie and Sophon held inside a suburban home- you might have felt like you were at least a thousand miles away from Portland. The smell of delicious Southeast Asian foods being cooked by the family, the exquisite gold accessories being adorned on Sallie during one of several outfit changes, and who could forget the full-sized roasted pig presented in the living room!

This wedding was one not to be forgotten and photographer, Scott McNamara, beautifully captured each moment while maneuvering around a jam-packed house with proud family members and friends. Congrats Sallie + Pon.

On a recent bridal consult, I was expecting to do both the bride and one bridesmaid's makeup to figure out the general look for the large bridal party. Unfortunately, the bridesmaid available was a bit under the weather w. product sensitive skin so it was decided we were better off not putting a makeup brush to her face. What better way to plan ahead for the other bridesmaids than to create a face chart- digital that is.

Thank you tablet laptop...seriously. This is the only time when technology is my friend and not my nemesis. Great reasons to use a digital face chart compared to paper: fast & easy to make changes, there is no mess, sending is a breeze, & saves paper!

Makeup Lowdown: Bridal Makeup Consultation

Here is how a recent makeup consultation went with the beautiful blushing bride-to-be, Sallie, who was kind enough to let us document the process and who will be tying the knot this summer.

I ask all brides these few basic questions before we begin the makeup process; here are Sallie's answers that provided inspiration for her makeup look created above.
1. How do you want to feel on your wedding day?
Beautiful yet sexy.
2. Describe the colors of your wedding and setting/themes if available:
Right now a coral pink and a sage-y green, maybe some brown. More natural colors. We will have Cambodian traditions in a restaurant setting reception.
3. Do you have a vision of your makeup look in terms of style and color? No.
4. What are some aspects of makeup you do not prefer- in terms of color and/or application for your wedding day? Nothing too bright, I am not too picky. Basically I want to be a better version of myself.
5. What hair style will you have on your wedding day? Either all up or half way down, curled.

I take into account the season of the wedding, the style + atmosphere, and of course, the bride's natural features as we just want to highlight them. It should be important that the makeup wears well all day (and night for that matter!) and will photograph well in indoor and outdoor light. For Sallie's bridal look, I opted for warm flattering peach tones that would work well with the traditional Cambodian attire she would be wearing on her wedding day. After the makeup look is complete and the bride has approved or made any changes to the look, I then record the makeup colors used and any notes necessary for me to recreate the look on the big day.

Just a few friendly tid-bits concerning bridal makeup:
- Think of the bridal consultation appointment as not only a way to explore how beautiful you want to look on your wedding day but also a great opportunity for you and the artist to get to know one another ;)
- Consider touch-ups throughout the day; if you do not have an artist staying on hand during the event to provide them, you may want to ask what lip shades they used and have a relative or bridesmaid carry some extra blotting papers, powder, and lip products nearby if needed.
- A great skin regime is important for a flawless makeup application- exfoliate twice a week, tone, moisturize & protect with SPF daily. Consult with a skin care specialist for what products you should use on your skin type. Be careful with any advanced skin care treatments or brow waxing right before your wedding day- schedule the waxing a few days prior to the big day in case there is any irritation.
- Don't let someone force a color or makeup look on you if you are not feeling it- it's your big day and you want to be pleased with how you look in those cherished wedding photos.
- I suggest making your consultation appointment a few months prior to the wedding date as you may get a new haircut and/or color, maybe a bit of a tan, but booking and securing the artist you want in advance is important as those popular wedding dates get snatched up fast!

"B" is for Boudoir...

A year ago today, I could not tell you exactly what "boudoir" really meant. So I made sure to brush up on some fine [online] literature and a few examples, for two days of fun-filled boudoir shoots with the very sweet photographer, Missy from Take 5 Photography! The hotel was perfect, in fact, we couldn't stop oohing and awing at the hip color palette and design details as we walked up to the room. If you are from the Portland area and can guess the luxury hotel by the photos- double points!

Missy provided a comfortable ambiance for the ladies (and myself) as she offered mimosas and snacks. The results of the shoot speak for themselves- Missy was able to beautifully capture each woman in their more intimate moments. Here is the gorgeous model, Jenn, whom I did her hair and makeup for the shoot. I recommend trying a boudoir session as a gift for your partner- or even yourself! Who wouldn't want to be a Victoria's Secret model for a day?

I am excited to post this collaboration with the extremely talented photographer/designer, Kelty, and her beautiful muse AND sister, Hannah! Every Friday, the duo create new eye candy for all of us to enjoy, entitled "TGIH" where they explore newfound inspirations, gorgeous settings, and ofcourse, their undeniable fashion sense. I was fortunate to jump in as makeup artist this week!

We decided to do two fun extremes- natural and fierce. Hannah took on the model challenge perfectly and Kelty created a unique vibe for each photo. A perfect blend of ying and yang for all the different sides in us!

"A Novel Romance" Wedding Show....Preview

I was planning on a semi-uneventful Sunday morning before sending off my other half to the airport in a few hours. Until I got a text at 9:30 am from the wonderful production/model Jillian Rabe that they needed help asap! So my day actually was destined (very "novel romance" wouldn't you agree?) to participate as a makeup artist for a beautiful wedding show held at the Cleaners-Ace Hotel in downtown Portland. I knew little about the event (but I like surprises) so I showed up with my makeup kit and found another great artist, Madeline Roosevelt, working at the event as well and hairstylists doing their thing. There were eight models and/or brides displaying the gorgeous wedding attire from all local designers sold at The English Department. I unfortunately couldn't stay for the event but the space was amazing!
